Hey book sistah, or brotha!
I’m Lalaa.
First of all thanks for stopping by, welcome to my likkle spot on these internet streets.
I am an Afro-Caribbean Poet and Cultural Critic from Toronto, on a mission to help readers Diversify & Decolonize their bookshelves.
I live in Toronto, with my squad (son and daughter) affectionately known as #TheCombrats.
Finding, sharing, and talking about diverse books is my life. I’ve realized that if people didn’t make a conscious and active effort to seek books by diverse authors then by default you wouldn’t find them, because these books don’t get the big budgets, these books aren’t in your face, these books get banned but these books are important.
My aim is simple, to highlight the voices that have been suppressed, in hopes that if we diversify our bookshelf it also helps diversify our approaches, bridge the gap, and break down some of the barriers that exist in our community.
My podcast “Getting Lit” is a monthly podcast that introduces listeners to new diverse books coming out each month that you should add to their list.
Our monthly Book Club is for women of colour who want to connect through diverse lit. Each month, we read a book, and then discuss it.
In addition, I share ways to #DiversifyYourBookshelf on thisblackgirlreads.ca
Remember if you’re reading what everyone else is reading then you’ll probably think the way everyone else is thinking.
