Black Literature Book Life Monthly Reads New Releases

50+ Books by Black Authors Coming Out in July 2026

There is something magical about a fresh stack of July releases.

Maybe it’s the long evenings that invite us to linger with a good book. Maybe it’s the slower pace of summer that finally gives us permission to chip away at our ever-growing TBR. Or maybe it’s because Black writers continue to gift us stories that challenge us, comfort us, entertain us, and remind us who we are.

This month is overflowing with incredible new releases. From literary fiction and romance to cultural criticism, history, memoir, and fantasy, there are more than 50 books by Black authors arriving this July, and honestly, our bookshelves are about to work overtime.

Below are the five books I’m most excited to read this month before you dive into the full list of July releases.

Good Morning Means I Love You by Kendra Allen

Kendra Allen has a way of writing that feels startlingly intimate, like someone finally found the words you’ve been carrying but could never quite say out loud. Her work refuses easy answers and instead invites us to sit with memory, family, grief, Blackness, tenderness, and the ordinary moments that quietly shape us. In her first novel, Allen explores love, partnership, motherhood, pleasure and the pursuit of freedom in one young woman’s defiantly unconventional terms.

Colorism: The Politics of Skin Tone and How We Get Free by Dr. Sarah L. Webb

One thing TBGR will always make room for is books that help us better understand ourselves and our communities. Colorism continues to shape opportunities, relationships, beauty standards, and belonging across the diaspora. I’m eager to learn from a text that doesn’t simply name the problem but imagines pathways toward healing.

The Love Dare by Abiola Bello

Abiola Bello writes joyful, heartfelt stories that celebrate Black love while never forgetting that relationships require courage, vulnerability, and growth. This one sounds equal parts fun and heartfelt.

When a challenge designed to push two people outside their comfort zones turns into something much more real, friendship, attraction, and self-discovery become impossible to ignore. Along the way, both must confront what they’re truly afraid of when it comes to love.

I love romance that understands falling in love is only part of the story. Becoming the kind of person who can receive love? That’s where the real work begins.

Hook, Line + Star-Crossed by Taccara Martin

If you’ve been around TBGR for a while, you know I love a romance with personality. Give me witty banter, unforgettable side characters, emotional depth, and two people who absolutely should not fall in love…until they do. This is an unexpected connection that throws two seemingly incompatible people together, forcing them to navigate attraction, timing, and life’s many complications. What begins as chance slowly becomes something neither of them can ignore.

This has all the ingredients for the kind of romance that leaves you smiling long after you’ve finished the last chapter.

The Black Madonna: Icon of Resistance and Nourisher of Souls by Christena Cleveland

This may be the book I’m most excited about all year. Christena Cleveland consistently invites readers to rethink history, faith, power, and belonging in ways that are both intellectually rigorous and spiritually expansive. Any book that centers Black women, sacred history, and liberation is immediately moving to the top of my list.

Through history, theology, travel, and personal reflection, Cleveland explores the enduring symbolism of the Black Madonna across cultures. She uncovers how this often-overlooked sacred figure has inspired resistance, healing, resilience, and hope for generations.

This feels like the kind of book that changes how you see the world. I already know I’ll be recommending it before I even finish it.
